Most Shopify stores leave money on the table. The good news: a few focused changes can move conversion rate and AOV without a full redesign. Here’s a framework I use on every store I touch.

1. Simplify the checkout

Checkout is where most drop-off happens. Every extra field, step, or decision increases friction. Use Shopify’s native checkout customization to:

  • Remove or collapse non-essential fields (company name, phone if not required)
  • Enable one-page checkout where possible
  • Add trust badges and guarantees near the pay button

I’ve seen 12–18% checkout completion lifts from checkout simplification alone.

2. Product page clarity

Visitors need to understand what they’re buying in under 5 seconds. Use clear headlines, bullet benefits, and high-quality images. Add a sticky add-to-cart bar on scroll so the CTA is always visible. If you sell variants, make size/color selection obvious—confusion kills conversion.

3. Cart abandonment recovery

Don’t rely only on email. Add an exit-intent popup with a small incentive (e.g. 10% off first order) and a clear CTA back to cart. Sync with Klaviyo or similar for automated flows. Cart recovery can recover 5–15% of abandoned revenue.

4. Trust and social proof

Reviews, ratings, and “X people bought this” matter. Install a review app (Judge.me, Loox, or Stamped) and surface reviews on product pages and collection pages. Testimonials on the homepage and checkout build trust at the moment of decision.

5. Speed and performance

Slow stores convert worse. Run Lighthouse, fix Core Web Vitals, and trim heavy apps. Lazy-load images, minimize scripts, and consider a theme that’s built for speed. Every second of delay can cost 7%+ in conversions.

6. Upsells and bundles

Post-purchase upsells and cart-page bundles increase AOV without hurting conversion. Use apps like ReConvert or native Shopify features. Keep offers relevant—related products, not random add-ons.

7. Mobile-first

Most Shopify traffic is mobile. Test checkout, forms, and product pages on real devices. Thumb-friendly buttons, readable font sizes, and minimal pinch-zoom are baseline. Mobile conversion rates often lag desktop—closing that gap is a quick win.

These seven areas cover the biggest levers. Start with checkout and product pages—they usually deliver the fastest ROI. If you want help auditing your store or implementing these changes, check out my Shopify services or book a discovery call.
